![]() ![]() The makers of OmmWriter have kept its core functions just as they were, but with a few added refinements. Comments: Overall, my experience with OmmWriter has been alright it works as advertised. The list of new features is short, and deliberately so. If you want a writing tool that you can make use of when you need your focus to be at its peak, then OmmWriter might be ideal for you. It's mostly stripped down of all the bells and whistles that you are probably used to if you're switching from other writing apps, but it gets the job done and focuses on the main goal, which is writing. I enjoy writing with the OmmWriter app especially when creative thinking is required by whatever I'm writing. Being able to set the kind of background I want while writing actually boosts creative thinking in my opinion because it sets the mood I want to be in for that piece of writing. The sound effects are pretty cool, especially when you use a pair of headphones as you write it's beautiful. It's a simple writing tool, so there's really nothing to figure out. There isn't much of a learning curve, so in my opinion, you will find it very easy to use. The app is simple, minimalistic, and basic at its core. There is nothing to complain about because it serves the need that it's intended for.Typed for Mac tries to be minimal, but lacks a lot of the distraction-free elements I am used to from Byword and others. In little areas, it doesn’t provide focus, but rather distracts the user with unnecessary alterations in font size, a colored cursor, and a side menu that pops up when the mouse is moved, among other things. In the default white color scheme, you can see your desktop blurred behind the background. ![]() OmmWriter's best feature is its simplicity and its ability to help you concentrate on actual writing. Transparency is always a welcome feature in any app, and it adds a nice additional dimension to Typed. ![]() I would recommend checking out their website because they have a free trial that you can test out before actually downloading/purchasing OmmWriter. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. It’s something you won’t find in Byword, TextEdit, or iA Writer. That could be because it’s considered distracting. While I don’t see it as a distraction, I don’t think it helps my productivity. The sandy color scheme has a bit less translucency on it, and the dark scheme has none at all, which is appropriate. OmmWriter is a tool which makes it easier for you to concentrate. Thankfully, you can turn translucency off completely in the app’s Preferences, which also stops the interface from lagging so much. Based on a natural setting, it effectively insulates your mind from distractions and sets up a direct line between your thoughts and your words. As if you were alone, you'll hear your inner voice clearer than ever and you'll be able to delve deeper into your creative process. Typed offers a soundtrack of eight sound scenes for Zen Mode. The other sound scenes were okay, but I found most of them annoying or too minimal. The sky, rain, and ocean scenes were the best. In its current form, Typed is simply not worth its $25 asking price. Noizio, a free app that provides you with a peaceful soundtrack, combined with Byword is a far better choice. Positive: Ommwriter's biggest appeal is how it looks and sounds. It would be a nice feature, letting you see more text as you write. While Typed doesn’t offer a unique experience, I would have at least expected a consistent one. It's a beautiful, distraction-free, and moderately customizable experience. It's relaxing to write in, and the ambient sounds and music along with key sounds are nice. Negative: It does have some big drawbacks though. OmmWriter looks pretty good, and sounds even better. But hard-core writers may want to wait a while. Typed is all over the place, from its unappealing custom font, which is a combination of Lato and Gentium Book (both open source), to its strange soundtrack. Word is great text editor, no doubt, but its exact opposite of distraction-free editor. My favorite thing about the app was Zen Mode. Plus there is no focus and typewriter mode. It has plenty of nice (hidden unless needed) functions. Q10 is also nice and is in single file, so is nicely portable. Byword is far superior, especially if you’re running a blog.īut it’s still not enough, especially for the price. That said, one factor clearly in Typed’s favor is that Realmac is an established company with a good reputation, and it offers a 6-month “no questions asked” return policy for software. This, coupled with the 7-day free trial, should make it easier for those still curious about Typed to try the app without too much worry. Typed for Mac ($24.99) is available now from the Realmac online store. It requires OS X 10.9 Mavericks or newer. The version reviewed is Typed 1.0.1, the latest available update at the time of publication.
